Although President’s Day originally celebrated the birthday of the first president of the United States, George Washington, it has now become a federal holiday to observe both the birthdays of President Washington, President Abraham Lincoln (the 16 th president) and all those who have served as president of the United States. It is observed the third Monday of February and taken as a holiday by federal employees and institutions, as well as many schools.
