What is God like?

Have you ever wondered what God is like? If so, you’re not alone. People everywhere of all ages, from different cultures and religions have, too. Maybe like many of your friends, family or coworkers, you’ve wondered how—or if—God exists, created the world, cares about mankind or if He hears you when you pray.

These are excellent questions which the Bible answers.

In Genesis 1:1, the Bible says that God created everything in nature, the universe we can see—and even those things in the spiritual world that we can’t.

Some people believe that God is a part of this spiritual and material creation He designed. For example, that He is nature (or a cloud, or the sun). However, just as it’s illogical to believe that an artist is part of the painting they have created. It’s illogical to say that God is part of His creation. Instead, creation represents His characteristics.

In the Bible, Romans 1:20 says that ever since the world was created, people have seen the earth and the sky, and through it have clearly seen God’s invisible qualities, such as his power and divine nature.

Besides revealing that God created the universe, the Bible has many other things to say about God. For example, from Scripture we know that God…

• Does not have a body like humans, but is spirit

• Knows everything, has perfect wisdom, is everywhere all at once, and is all-powerful.

• He’s also perfect and holy.

The Bible also shows that God has emotions, a will, and that He can reason. What does this mean for you? It means that He is not an impersonal force that cannot care about you. Instead, He…

• Hears you when you pray and can answer your prayers

• knows how you feel when you suffer

• loves and cares for you

• is able to forgive you and wants to forgive you, too.
